Foot Health check

A podiatric neurovascular assessment is a simple, non-invasive check of the blood flow (vascular) and nerve supply (neurological) to your feet. It helps identify circulation issues or changes in sensation that may increase the risk of foot problems.

A podologist checks the diabetic foot

During the assessment, your podiatrist will check your pulse, skin temperature, capillary refill, and sensation using specialist equipment. This ensures early detection of conditions such as poor circulation, diabetes-related changes, or nerve damage, allowing for timely treatment and prevention of complications.

If neurovascular issues are detected during your assessment, your podiatrist will explain the findings and recommend the most appropriate next steps. These may include:

  • Referral to your GP or specialist for further investigation, such as vascular or neurological testing.

  • Monitoring and regular foot checks to track changes over time and prevent complications.

  • Footwear advice and protective insoles to reduce pressure and protect areas with reduced sensation or poor circulation.

  • Wound care and skin protection guidance to prevent ulcers or infections.

  • Lifestyle and health recommendations, such as smoking cessation, exercise, and maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Early detection and management are key - prompt action can greatly reduce the risk of serious foot complications.
