skin & nail care

This is a huge part of what we do as podiatrists. We are specialists in treating skin and nail conditions and, if possible, offer you a treatment plan to stop these often painful conditions from recurring.

General podiatry covers a variety of things such as corns, calluses, verrucae, fungal nails, split heels, etc. Your initial consultation will include a full foot health check including nerve testing, pulse testing and whichever relevant podiatry treatment you need and a plan moving forwards.

Podiatrists aim to educate you as much as possible so you feel empowered to keep your condition under control as much as possible by yourself. But in circumstances where a podiatrist is needed, we are always here to help.

Calluses are areas of thickened, hard skin that develop in response to repeated friction, often on the heels, balls of the feet, or sides of the toes. While they are the body’s natural way of protecting the skin, calluses can become painful, unsightly, or cause further problems if left untreated.

Treatment by a podiatrist typically involves gently and safely reducing the thickened skin with a scalpel blade.  Advice on footwear, insoles, or skincare may also be given to reduce recurrence and keep the skin healthy.

Corns are small, concentrated areas of hard skin that form over pressure points on the feet, often causing sharp pain when walking. Unlike calluses, they have a hard central core that presses into the deeper layers of skin.

A podiatrist can safely and painlessly remove corns using a scalpel, providing instant relief. They may also advise on footwear, padding, or orthotics to address the underlying cause and help prevent corns from returning.

Nail care covers everything from routine trimming to the management of more complex nail problems. This includes safe cutting and shaping of nails to prevent issues, specialist care for ingrowing toenails (which can be painful or prone to infection), and treatment options for fungal nail infections that affect appearance and nail health.

For patients with diabetes, professional nail care is especially important to reduce the risk of complications and maintain good foot health. Regular podiatry nail care not only keeps nails neat and comfortable but also helps prevent problems before they develop.
